Get Fanged Up: What I Hope To See On TVD

Less than a month until THIS!

Before I get all glargity-marg and non-verbal at the thought of seeing Ian Somerhalder‘s lovely…erm….face on television every week for another season…

Too late.

…what was I saying? Oh. Yes. If you’re not caught up, here be spoilers. Ye’ve been warned. Argh.

The Vampire Diaries returns in less than a month, and with it my weekly heart palpitations.

I’ve loved each season so far, which came as quite a surprise because I did not like the books and expected to loathe the show. (The Secret Circle was quite an exercise in the inverse of the previous statement.)

I was shocked by the level of character development put into the show, specifically into Caroline Forbes and Tyler Lockwood. I was also happy to see a vampire who didn’t spend all his time sitting at a desk and brooding into the darkness with his eyebrows pulled down over half his face. (*Cough. Angel.*)

No, I’m not talking about Stefan. Damon.

If you’re reading my blog, you might have noticed the little logline in the header. Saving the world from brooding, one self-actualized vampire at a time. Broody vamp. So not my style.

That said, we’re in for a very interesting season opener (or the world’s worst execution of the potential for a very interesting season opener).

Elena went and died with Damon’s blood in her system. Which means she’s coming back in transition. And since she’s sort of the erm…main show protagonist, I doubt they’re going to allow her to off herself by abstaining from tasty human blood.

That said, here are a few things I hope to see in season four:

1. An adaptable, resilient Elena.

I’ve just told you my stance on brooding, but I do understand that getting vamped when you’ve recently expressed your total lack of desire to do so would be a bit of a shocker. It would also require an adjustment period. However, adjustment periods make for crappy television, as evidenced by the haterade that spawned from Buffy‘s re-entry into life in season six of BtVS.

What I want to see from Elena is not necessarily for her to embrace her new fangyness, but for her to at least accept the fact that she’s stuck with it (probably). I don’t want to see a season four that is entirely centered on Elena brooding about being a vampire and Stefan trying not to be happy about Elena being a vampire and Damon being Damon about Elena being a vampire.

Okay, I’m fine with the latter, because Damon’s not going to be anything else.

Elena’s shown some serious strongitude. Let’s see some more of it.

He’s like a little kid with food on his face.

2. Klaus

I can see why the writers are loathe to let him go.

He’s a totally selfish, mind-numbingly narcissistic prick most of the time, but then he does something like show affection for Caroline in a way that gives you warm fuzzies and makes you forget that he tried to murder Elena and everyone she loved just so he could take a jaunty walk in the sunshine.

That makes for some decent conflict. More Klaus.

Not really this.

3. A well-conceived, fresh Big Bad

If they go for Klaus as the next Big Bad (again), I’m not sure how I’ll feel about it. They’ll have to find a way to make it artful and fresh in order to make it believable with the history he shares with the protagonists now. He’ll likely be pretty cheesed off that he’s lost his ickle doppelgänger, but she’s pretty useless to him as a vampire, so I can’t imagine them making a convincing plotline out of that situation again.

Give us someone really insidious. Give us someone believable and frightening. Make it a nice grey area. Screw the moral absolutes. This show does it pretty well, so I hope they amp that up for season four.

4. More Elena and Damon

Okay, okay. Part of this is pure selfishness. I love Damon more than Stefan, and I really want to see them explore the obvious affection and caring that has grown throughout the last three seasons.

Beyond that, I really love their dynamic. I have always thought Damon was the better man for Elena, because he doesn’t kid himself about who he is. In many ways, he’s like Spike for that. And Stefan, by contrast, is like Angel. He easily loses control and can’t come to terms with who and what he is. He depends on Elena to keep him grounded, but Damon supports her.

(Although Damon’s methods often tend toward the objectionable.)

I mostly want to see where their relationship goes. Especially with Elena as a vampire. Part of this goes back to me wanting to see an adaptable, resilient Elena. If she goes that way, I expect the season will lean toward Damon. If she pitches a brood-fest all season, Stefan will likely be her best company. Or not — he might flip out seeing himself reflected in his girlfriend.

The countdown is on to 11 October!

What do you hope to see in season four aside from Damon’s rippling abdominals?

Another vote for Elena & Damon! (And yes…Damon is TVD’s Spike! *swoon*)

Oh, yeah. 🙂 I love Damon. Plus, his character is so much more interesting than Stefan’s.

I’m counting down with you! I hope the first episode deals with Elena actually transitioning but that’s it. Episode 2, I’d like to see her in full vamp mode. I really hope Bonnie doesn’t interfere and find a way to keep her human.

Me too…I don’t think they will let Bonnie turn her human though. I think she is going to remain a vampire.

I feel like I’ve been waiting for ever for this new season. I read the books so I knew eventually she’d turn, but this is sooo delicious the way they did it. Can’t wait for more Elena and Damon. 🙂

    I know! *Wipes away drool*

*Makes sure no one is looking*

I love how they did it. They wrapped up season 3 so artfully. Can’t wait for season 4!
