Ring the Bell

We had a midnight tiebreaker last night, but just as I was about to conk out on my keyboard, some thoughtful soul voted and let me go to bed. 🙂 Congratulations to the winner of the not-so-quick draw, J.B. Lacaden for “Hanging.” Also congrats to the lovely Lyra Selene, who will take on J.B. in the next round of matches!

Here are today’s matches for you to vote on!

Match 7

Matt Sloan, “Final Thoughts” versus J. Whitworth Hazzard, “A Dark Path”

You can read these entries HERE.

Match 8

Steven Paul Watson, “Night in Vegas” versus Larz Yerian, “The Peak”

I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to vote and support these awesome writers! It means a lot to me, and I’m sure it means a lot to them as well.

Today I want to start a discussion, gentle viewers. I’d love to hear your thoughts with the aim of including them in tomorrow’s blog post on this subject.

Yesterday I spoke about my own personal goals.

Today I want to hear yours.

I’d love to see the comments fill up with your answers — let’s take a dreary Monday and turn it into something inspired.

1. What MUST you accomplish in your life to feel fulfilled?

2. What drives you toward that goal?

3. What advice would you give others setting out on their MUST ACCOMPLISH goals?

I’m opening up the floor to you. Go nuts.

I want to finish my novel, and by “finish” I mean get it to a place where I can read it and say okay, that’s the best I can do world, and send it off to readers who will enjoy it, appreciate it, use it as a coaster, whatever. After that the next one will be a breeze, right? The one after that, no problem. So, that’s three novels, and then, check the box on life fulfilled.

Wait, maybe that should be career goal fulfilled, because life is more than that. It should be about strong, healthy relationships and helping people, and even if nobody ever reads the book at least it was written. I also think we should leave the world a better place than we found it. That’s probably more fulfilling than anything.

What drives me is love of the written word. If you don’t love what you do, why do it at all?

Advice for those setting out on their goals, stay focused on your goals, but also keep balance and perspective in your life.
Remember your ancient Chinese philosopher Laozi, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. (Though now that I look it up it’s slightly different in translation, but you get the idea).

I always think of Oscar Wilde when anything advice-related comes up. “I always pass on good advice. It is the only thing to do with it. It is never any use to oneself.”

And the lines from An Ideal Husband-
Lord Goring: I am glad you have called. I am going to give you some good advice.
Mrs. Cheverley: Oh! Pray don’t. One should never give a woman anything she can’t wear in the evening.

I think for me to feel like my life is fulfilled I MUST accomplish something that makes me really proud. Until that happens I think I’m always going to feel a bit unfulfilled. I don’t necessarily know what it will be (I have a few ideas, but life can be surprising).

What drives me is that vision of fulfilment, of being able to say to myself and the world “I freaking did it. It was hard work and I didn’t know if I was ever going to make it here, but I did it.” Of proving myself to the naysayers. Of being the best that I can be.

My advice to anyone setting out on a path (especially a path less taken, like trying to write for a living) would be to find a way, whatever way works, to be a less distractible person. Distraction is the death of creativity, especially in this plugged-in world where a universe of fashion blogs, TV shows, movies, and games where you shoot birds at pigs and slice up fruit is literally at your fingertips. That, and be prepared to hate everything you ever work on at some point, and to NOT delete it all on a whim, because you will eventually see the merit in it again.

And to carry on the trend of advice-themed quotes, Benjamin Franklin once said: “Wise men don’t need advice, and fools won’t take it.”
