No, this isn’t another ZAP weaponry post (though more of those are in the cards). This is a much more insidious type of weapon. It slices your time into slivers. It devours your hobbies and social life.
What could it be?
*Mystical lurky music*
Why, none other but the autumn lineup of television shows, of course!
Television probably can be blamed for most of my procrastination. Between sprinting through two seasons of the Vampire Diaries to doing the same with Lost, it’s fair to say I watch a lot of it. I still read, write, work, and prepare for the zombie apocalypse, but when I’m not doing those things or cleaning up the giant Nalgene of water my cat just knocked over onto the carpet, I’m watching TV.
And I’d be lying if I said I regretted that. I am way too excited about my autumn shows returning. So without further rigamarole and tomfoolery, I bring you…
There are a bunch of shows I can’t wait to see more from. Maybe you’ve missed out on some of them. Maybe you are plugging your ears (eyeballs?) and chanting, “Do not listen. Must not watch television” over and over. Maybe you’re picking your nose.
But in a few weeks, you could be watching one of these!
I got into this show sometime during the second season, and it took some dragging. Once I got hooked? Unstoppable. Not only is the show a lot more raunchy, irreverent, and hilarious than you’d expect from the average sitcom, it has a cleverness that transcends the laugh track. And they’re not afraid to get sad, to get gritty, to get real.
Jason Segel, Alysson Hannigan, Josh Radnor, Neil Patrick Harris, and Cobie Smulders pull it off week after week. They’ve had a couple rough patches (*cough* season five *cough*), but they always bring it back. If you haven’t gotten into this show yet, drop what you’re doing and go watch it. And if you need a little help to stay focused…well. Eat a sandwich. *Cough.*
I expected to hate this show. I didn’t like the books, which pained me because I adore L.J. Smith in general, and when I heard they were making it into a show, I almost cried. Instead, it sucked me in.
The character development is off the charts — even secondary characters are nuanced and three dimensional. In fact, a couple of them became central characters throughout the seasons with fantastic story arcs that became some of my favourites on television. There’s blood and scariness — as well there should be on a vampire show — and they capture the total range of human emotion. Season 4 is going to be nuts-face. I can’t wait.
Plus, there’s Damon. Yum.
I’m supposed to sympathise with a serial killer? Well, yeah. And cheer him on.
When I first heard the premise of this show, I thought, “No way they expect me to support a sadistic murderer.” And I was right — they don’t. Dexter was imbued with a certain code as a child, one that he has altered a bit through the seasons, but he still has the basics: find the bad guy, kill the bad guy, don’t get caught.
And a bad guy it always is — the show writers know that if you have a serial killer for a protagonist, you have to make the villains extra villainy. John Lithgow’s performance was masterful a couple seasons ago, and they keep amping up the stakes.
Through the show, you see Dexter form real connections — something he doesn’t think himself capable of at the show’s start. But it happens. And it’s worth watching.
What, Emmie likes zombies? Pfft.
Erm. Yes. If you weren’t already aware, where have you been?
This show is masterful in many ways. The character development and storytelling have always been above-par, and the zombies look effing amazing. You also learn some handy tricks to file away for the inevitable zombie apocalypse!
My one real gripe with the show is the treatment of women, which I wrote about some time ago. I have some hopes in that arena for the upcoming season, however, with the advent of a new character and the seriously harrowing experience of one of the main characters in the season finale.
What shows are you excited to see return this autumn? Any new shows that have caught your fancy?
