Why Quantum Physics Hates Me

Yeah, I don’t know what it is, but it wants to eat me. Projection of a Calabi-Yau manifold, one of the ways of compactifying the extra dimensions posited by string theory (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Once upon a time during my first year at university, they forced a course on me. It was called Scientific Thought and Discovery, and all it did was show me that no, not everything loves me. Namely, quantum physics.

String theory beat me into a bloody pulp.

Particles swarmed all over me and devoured me to the marrow.

And now, the concept of time has returned from 2004 to slip its noose around my neck.

For those of you unaware, I set a deadline for myself to send out my first query letter on 1 September this year. Which is, by my calculations, nine days from now. Nine days.

And because quantum physics hates me (Hate me? Are they plural? Is it singular? Ugh.), not only is time coming to kill me, but it’s speeding up.

English: High Speed - Lights

I typed in “light speed” and it came out “high speed lights,” but okay. English: High Speed – Lights (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Is there any particular reason why this book needs to hit the query stage NOW? Well, sort of. It’s set in 2014, and it would be timely if it came out before the Scottish referendum for independence that forms the backdrop of the entire plot. And we writers are familiar with the speed of publishing.

(I’ll give you a hint. It’s slower than both the speed of light and lights viewed at high speed.)

That gives me nine days to polish, primp, and edit up this bad boy till it shines. I’ve got the whole thing highlighted in Margie Lawson’s fabulous EDITS system. Now I just have to actually do it. And hope it works.

What’s worse than a deadline? A deadline you’re fuzzy on how to meet.

So today, I am going to ignore time as it dances around me making oogly-boogly noises and focus on the fact that the lovely Liv Rancourt nominated me for the One Lovely Blog Award.

The game is to link back to the person who gave you the award and then list seven things about yourself and nominate seven bloggers to do the same!

The trick is finding seven things you don’t already know about me. Hm.

Here goes.

1. I wanted to be a marine biologist for a while. Then a molecular biologist. I sometimes wish I had pursued biology as my major instead of switching to history. But history nursed my love of writing, so that’s what I chose.

2. I hate summer. Actually hate it. But only when it’s hot. I like summers to be like most people like their spring/autumn.

3. My favourite wine is a Dornfelder. It’s from the southwest region of Germany (around Stuttgart), and it’s a delicious light, sweet, red.

4. I want to travel more than anything. What keeps it from happening is a massive amount of debt from university.

5. I’m allergic to my pets, but I will never get rid of them. My solution is a vacuum cleaner that was one of my more expensive life lessons.

6. I believe (rather controversially) that money can buy a certain amount of happiness. It doesn’t translate into happiness in the sense of 1 Money Unit = 1 Happiness Unit, but I believe money can buy peace of mind. Many people find this hard to understand if they didn’t grow up in a family where sometimes a choice had to be made between food and rent, electricity or medicine. Some wealthy people are unhappy, but poor people live under constant pressure and stress pertaining to basic survival needs. Think Maslow.

7. I have never had a cavity, but my bottom teeth have always been crooked. And I still have my two upper impacted wisdom teeth.

Well, there you have it. Me biting my thumb at time. πŸ™‚

As for the seven of you to whom I pass the baton…I give you:

Martin Reaves, The Mad Gay Man, Lyra Selene, Rafael PiΓ±ero, Laura Howard, Angie Richmond, and Amber West

Go forth and procrastinate! Or one up me and actually get to work. πŸ™‚

To the question of your looming deadline…in the land of Quantum Theory, time is not linear…it is already September 1st. So you’re screwed. On the other hand, if we accept this theory, it is also 4 months ago, or 5 or 6 years ago or what you will. So kick back and relax–you have lots of time! πŸ™‚

And what an honor to be nominated by the esteemed Emmie Mears, the original Lovely Blogger! 7 things about myself…well, I should be working, but I’m sure I can fit in a blog on this topic. Maybe I’ll learn something about myself. Assuming I understand what I’m supposed to do. Actually, rarely understanding what I’m supposed to do will likely be be #1 on the list of things people don’t know about me. πŸ™‚

Cheers,

I wasn’t sure how you were going to get from quantum physics to giving me an award, but you did it.

As for your deadline, I am going through my edits now with Shadows in Moonlight. I didn’t realize how much of a pain in the ass it would be. I wish you luck, and I know you’ll do well.

Thank you for the award! Now I get to talk about myself. πŸ™‚

Thanks for the mention, Emmie, and all the best with getting your edits done! You should try summer in the Northwest sometime, where you can count the number of days the temp is over 80 on your fingers. Well, you’d probably need your toes, too, but still…

Hey, cool…there was a time I wanted to be a marine biologist too, but then I took a college-level biology class and decided otherwise. I suppose it’s just as well. It looks like a cool job on the National Geographic channel and stuff, but I get the feeling it’s generally a tough market in which to find employment. It’s still a cool field, though.

Stop the thumb biting and get on with it, Emmie. The worst you can here is “No thanks” and then you can go back and make it even better. Every good author has a fine stack of rejections!

    Thank you, Patricia!

What I need is some time…I’ve been working nonstop at one job or another all week without an hour to myself. I’m off Saturday, though. I think it is time to sequester myself for a day and just get it going.

Afsaneh

Call me crazy but I really enjoyed Quantum, or what little of it I did in school. It was the only part of physics that I didn’t despise completely. Although, when exams came around, I changed my mind.
Oh, and Einstein’s postulates . . . No, I’m sorry but length does not contract and time does not dilate. I don’t care what he says.
No, just no.

Crooked teeth are a yes for me too, and a dislike for summer.
Also, good on your for choosing what influenced your writing πŸ™‚

I actually didn’t hate quantum once I started getting the hang of it — though that happened approximately three weeks before the end of the semester, and I didn’t get a chance to revel in the glory of actually understanding string theory because then it was winter break and I forgot it all over again.

    But! Still interesting.

That just changed my name? It’s Afsaneh, by the way . . . social media hates me.

So I finally got around to being Lovely on my blog and such. Had fun with it. Thought I’d post the link. If it’s inappropriate for me to do so, please feel free to delete the post. I’m still a little unclear as to protocol on these bliggety bloggety type things. πŸ™‚ http://mott342.wordpress.com/2012/09/10/well-isnt-this-just-lovely/
