You Lived With Us and Never Knew Image

You Lived With Us and Never Knew

You lived with us and never knew.

You never thought to ask.

You knew your god, said he saw through

all people like clear glass

But we were here and went unseen

Your words struck even so

We knew what sermons were to mean

like stones the sinners throw

You lived with us and never knew

that we were right beside

living fearfully in truth

mouths bound so we could hide

You preached love with tongues

but turned words to stones

that made us come undone

Community and fellowship;

in all we were alone.

You lived with us and never knew

You thought you could so surely know

We were far as sky is blue

And not in your very home.

You lived with us and never knew

and stoned us with your words

And at the brightest chance we flew

to where our stories could be heard

You lived with us and never knew

After years you seek us out

To catch up with “how are you?”

Unknowing that we shout

We shout with PRIDE to so be safe

Or safER, as is true

You don’t expect to see us now, because

You lived with us and never knew.

This is about religion and queerness, about religion and trans-ness. I got a friend request from a previous pastor’s wife yesterday. She and her husband once took me and my queer mother and my stepdad in when we were evicted and could have been homeless. I don’t believe she meant me harm by that request, but she certainly hasn’t known me in 13+ years and until I told her in a message, was unaware of my identity. On her wall, I saw a transphobic link, of bathroom panic, trans-hysteria. As a non-cis, non-binary person, that flashed me right back to all my buried queerness.

To all those so terrified of us, of trans people, of queer people — this poem is for you. You know us. You probably even love us. You just don’t know it.

I’m kicking off Pride Month a day early.
